IntroductionThe WinAUSTAL training course provides an introduction to dispersion modelling in accordance with Annex 2 of the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft 2021) and to the correct use of the PC program WinAUSTAL Pro. |
Background on AUSTAL / TA Luft
The dispersion model AUSTAL is the reference model provided by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) for implementing Annex 2 “Dispersion Modelling” of the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft). In contrast to Gaussian models, the Lagrangian particle approach used in AUSTAL enables realistic simulation of complex topography, building structures and variable wind and turbulence fields. The revised Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft) came into force on 1 December 2021 and form the legal basis for permitting and assessment procedures of installations relevant under German air pollution control law.
WinAUSTAL Pro provides a user-friendly interface that fully integrates AUSTAL and includes, among others, the following functions:
- Project-related, layer-based user interface (DE/EN)
- Direct access to the current AUSTAL version including BesMIN and BesMAX
- Substance list according to TA Luft (particulate matter, NO₂, CO, SO₂, odour, dioxins, bioaerosols, etc.)
- Integration of buildings, terrain, meteorological time series and GIS data
- Extensive visualisation (2D/3D, wind rose distribution, result plots, time series)
Contents of the Training
- Fundamentals of dispersion modelling according to the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft, 2021), including regulatory framework and scientific sources
- Fundamentals and input data of the AUSTAL model
- Preparation of meteorological wind data
- Project setup in WinAUSTAL Pro: sources, buildings, meteorology, terrain
- Parameterisation of emissions and plume rise
- Evaluation of calculation results (concentration fields, time series, odour assessment areas)
- Quality assurance of dispersion modelling
- Practical exercises with realistic examples
Participation & Information
